Indecision Is Not An Option

Perhaps one of the most critical responsibilities of management is making crisp, effective decisions and then rallying the resources to execute them. In many cases, however, leaders quietly and unwittingly opt for one of the worst possible decisions they could make: indecision.

Many perceive indecision as “keeping options open,” but this is not the case. While we avoid committing to a decision, markets change, competitors advance, and suppliers move on.

Indecision, is simply delaying the making of a decision. Delaying a decision is effectively delaying work. Being indecisive is therefore no better than procrastination. Both are a barrier to getting things done.

People are indecisive out of fear of making a bad decision. So what’s the worst that can happen if we make the wrong decision? The fact that we decided to do it means that it was the right decision at the time with the information we had.

By making decisions constantly based on the information available, we uncover newer information more quickly. Inaction rarely provides anything actionable.

Making a mistake is much better than indecision. If we make a mistake at the very least we are moving toward something. Mistakes are necessary and valuable. Mistakes create knowledge.

When we have an unknown outcome it’s always better to act than it is to not act.

Summing-up: Sometimes we become indecisive because a lack of self confidence and a tendency to worry about potential problems. Rather than looking at the problems we have to consider the opportunities. To overcome indecision we need to have the faith to follow our intuition, bearing in mind that sometimes it is not what we do, but rather how we do things that is important.
