Knowledge Sharing is the New Power

Knowledge was power, back when knowledge wasn’t easily available or disseminated.

Knowledge is not power. The sharing of knowledge is power. It’s crazy to think we’re the only one in our company or organization with specific knowledge, and therefore power.

Rather than trying to hoard something that can be easily acquired, we must share our knowledge. Two people will collectively know more than one. Three will know more than two. And when we have a room full of smart people sharing their knowledge, there’s very little we can’t accomplish together.

Power is knowledge shared. The power of a community of practice is exponentially related to the knowledge shared by the individual members.

So knowledge sharing is the new power play in the enterprise. In an IDC recent survey, companies reported 11-30% productivity gains from using social collaboration tools.

Summing-up: According to the old adage, with synergy, one plus one equals three. The whole exceeds the sum of its parts. Knowledge sharing among the members in an organization facilitates the development of competitive advantages.
