With the pressures of business, we can easily become overcommitted. If you make commitments, but consistently are unable to fulfill them, then you are breaking your workplace promises.
Commitments are missed for various reasons. First, we get sloppy, we fail to write down commitments and forget. Second, we over commit. Third, we may just not be diligent, adapting an “I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude. However, to customers, colleagues and bosses, tomorrow is not what you promised.
If you mess up, and we all do, then start with confession and an apology, rather then excuses when you do follow through late.
Regardless of what you call it, reputation is important. If people know you keep your commitments and get things done, that reputation makes you valuable. Not as valuable as if you were made out of solid platinum inlaid with rubies, but valuable enough that you’ll have many more options as you proceed through life. Only say “yes” to commitments you can take.
Summing-up: It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows. Plan carefully to keep your commitments.
